What To Expect At Andersons Salmon Camp

Nushagak River Fishing, by reputation, is the premier king salmon fishing destination in Alaska. Flowing 275 miles from the West slope of the Alaska Range into Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea, access is extremely limited with only a few small native villages along the river and a couple dozen lodges and camps spread out. King salmon runs exceed 100,000 most years with an additional 1 million sockeye and 500,000 chum salmon also returning thru our lower river reach during a 1 month period of time. Mid June to mid July is prime time at our location 35 miles from Dillingham.

Despite the limited access (float plane or a long boat ride) we are not so far out in the bush that we are able to build and operate a very comfortable river camp. Our fishing is conducted out of Willie Predator river boats, We primarily use conventional bait casting gear, including Lamiglas Certified Pro series rods and Rogue Rods. Our rods our rated at 10-25 lb med-heavy action making for a very sporting fight. Our main techniques include side drifting (or “dragging”), trolling with light lead and back trolling/bouncing. Most our methods are “active fishing” methods were the angler is casting and holding the rod prior to feeling the bite and setting the hook. Our reels are Ambassudor or Okuma level wind reels rigged with 25 lb mainline.

A typical day begins with a full chef prepared breakfast at 7 am. With 24 hrs of daylight, many guests are up earlier catching salmon off the bank before breakfast !!. Our guide day usually begins by 8 am and our fishing destinations are never more than a 5 minute run from Camp, we fish until about 12:30 then come back to Camp for lunch and to clean the mornings catch. We are usually back in the boat for about 5 hours in the afternoon then wrap up the guide day at 6:30 pm for another excellent meal. Alaska Salmon camp is located in an area of the river without any braids or islands, which means the entire run of salmon is swimming past the Camp. At the Camp, we have the main channel within 50 feet of the bank, which makes for some excellent bank fishing in the evenings. As stated earlier, it doesn’t get dark.

While you may have heard rumors about catching 100 king salmon in a day, I will honestly tell you that our typical day is about 30-40 kings (8-10 per rod), however, I have experienced many 80-100+ king days and we usually experience these days a couple times each year.

We practice a daily limit of one king salmon per person on the Nushagak (regulations allow retaining 1 king under 28” and 1 king over 28” per day, however, the use of bait is not allowed after retaking the second king). Annual limit is 4 kings of any size. Unlike many rivers in Alaska, the Nushagak regulations allow catch and release fishing after retaining your daily/annual limit. Our king salmon range in size from 8 - 50 lbs with most in the 18-30 lb class. Our location is influenced by the tides and all our salmon are fresh from the oven .... oops. I meant fresh from the ocean, bright silver, eager biters and full of energy. You will be amazed at the power of a 20 lb king. For anglers wanting to take additional salmon home, regulations allow retaining 5 “jacks” daily (kings under 20”) plus 5 chum and/or sockeye per day with no annual limit. 4 average kings will fill a 50# fish box. Included in the package is all salmon retained will be commercially vacuum packed in 1-2 lb pieces, then frozen and boxed for transport home. Due to our small camp occupancy we are able to handle each fish individually and you are guaranteed to go home with the salmon you caught.

The Anderson's Outdoors Alaska Salmon Camp sits right in the middle of the most productive stretch of water on this river, just below the East and West forks of the Nushagak, which divides the river's run of salmon. That means you get the full force of the river's fabulous salmon runs, right in front of camp. You are literally right in the heart of the world's best salmon fishing. On the bank of the river, we have 4 - two person cabins with all necessary bedding, a large dining tent, and a shower facility. You will eat three hearty meals per day prepared by our camp chef.
